
Learn to cook Gongura/ Sorrel leaves Fish curry recipe- unique fish recipe with a special sour and tangy flavor of Gongura/ Sorrel leaves.
Fish can be cooked in many ways- Fish curry, Fish fry, boneless fish recipes, Kerala fish curry, Bengali fish recipes, grilled fish, barbequed fish, appetizers.
STEP BY STEP GONGURA FISH RECIPE INSTRUCTIONS WITH PHOTOS:
Gongura/ Sorrel leaves paste – Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a pan, add green chilis and fry for a minute. Then add gongura/ sorrel leaves and cook for 5 minutes till they wilt and are cooked. Let it cool and make a paste.
- Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds and fry for 30 seconds.

2. Add chopped onions and fry for 4-5 minutes till they turn translucent.

3. Add ginger garlic paste and fry for 1-2 minutes till the raw smell goes away.

5. Add the paste to the pan, mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes.

6. Add salt, turmeric, chili powder, cumin powder and cook for 1-2 minutes.

7. Now there are two methods to cook:
Option 1- Add fish directly to the gongura curry base, fry for 3-4 minutes and then add water to the pan.
Option 2- Add water to the fried gongura curry base and let it boil. Meanwhile, fry fish in a separate pan with 1 tbsp of oil and then add it to the curry base.


8. Cover and cook for 12-15 minutes. Take off the lid, add some garam masala and cook till the gravy reaches desired consistency.

9. Garnish with coriander and serve hot with steamed rice.

Gongura/ Sorrel leaves Fish recipe
Ingredients
- 2-3 tbsp Oil
- 1 tsp Cumin seeds
- 2 Medium Chopped Onions
- 1 tbsp Ginger garlic paste
- 1 Cup Gongura/ Sorrel leaves paste Check below for instructions
- 1/4 tbsp Turmeric
- 2 tbsp Salt
- 1 tbsp Chili Powder Optional- Check notes
- 1/2 tbsp Cumin powder
- 1 tbsp Garam masala
- 500 grams Fish I used Rohu
- 2 cups water
- Few Coriander leaves
Gongura/ Sorrel leaves paste
- 1 tbsp Oil
- 1 bunch Gongura/ Sorrel leaves 200-250 grams
- 3-4 Green chili Adjust to taste – Check notes
Instructions
Gongura paste

- Then add gongura/ sorrel leaves and cook for 5 minutes till they wilt and are cooked. Let it cool and make a paste.
Fish curry

- Add gongura/ sorrel leaves paste to the pan, mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Add salt, turmeric, chili powder, cumin powder and cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Now there are two methods to cook: Option 1- Add fish directly to the gongura curry base, fry for 3-4 minutes and then add water to the pan.Option 2- Add water to the fried gongura curry base and let it boil. Notes
- You can skip adding red chili powder if you want to use only green chili or use both- Adjust quantity as needed
- You can use any fish that can be used for curries like rohu, catla, etc. I used rohu fish.
- Preferably use curry cut pieces.
