Tamarind Rasam – Without Jaggery

Learn to make Tamarind rasam – A quick and easy recipe perfect for those lazy days. It is also very soothing for cold & sore throat.

Tamarind Rasam is a spicy, aromatic recipe made with cumin seeds, coriander powder and tamarind extract. The main key to making a good rasam is not to overboil as it loses its flavor. It does not need any rasam powder.

Cumin is rich in antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties. Tamarind is excellent for gut health, prevents constipation and digestion. While Curry leaves are great for weight loss, improving eyesight and is rich in Vitamin A, B and C.

It makes for a healthy side that can be served as a soup or with steamed rice, vegetable fry, non-vegetarian recipes or plain papad. There are many variations to this simple tamarind rasam recipe. But this is the most loved one at our home.

STEP BY STEP TAMARIND RASAM RECIPE INSTRUCTIONS WITH PHOTOS:
  1. Soak tamarind in water for 10 minutes.

2. Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds, dry red chilis and fry for a minute.

3. Then add chopped onions, curry leaves and turmeric. Cook for 2-3 minutes.

4. Add water, salt, coriander powder, soaked tamarind (with water) and let it boil for 10 minutes.

5. Serve with steamed rice, dal, papad, vegetable fry or non-vegetarian recipes (check out recipe links below).

Ingredients
  

  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • 1/2 tbsp Cumin seeds Jeera
  • 2 Dry red chili
  • 1 medium Onion
  • Few Curry leaves
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric
  • 1/2 tbsp Salt
  • 1/2 tbsp Coriander powder Raw
  • Coin sized Tamarind
  • 4 cups Water

Instructions
 

  • Soak tamarind in water for 10 minutes.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds, dry red chilis and fry for a minute.
  • Add chopped onions, curry leaves and turmeric. Cook for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add water, salt, coriander powder, soaked tamarind (with water) and let it boil for 10 minutes.
  • Serve with steamed rice, plain dal, vegetable fry or non-vegetarian recipes (check out recipe links above).

Notes

  1. Soak tamarind in normal water for 10 minutes or add it to boiled water and mash it slightly before adding into the recipe.
  2. You can add jaggery as well while boiling for that sweet taste.
